Behind Those Pretty Faces

No different opinions, no objections, no questions, no disagreements, a society where everyone is happy and looks the same. Do you really think that the operation is the only way to be happy? Do you believe that having big eyes, having full lips, having a smooth clear skin (Westerfeld, 16) is the best thing that could happen to you? Becoming pretty will only give you a pretty face and an empty mind.

This is the idea of perfection in Uglies' mind
My name is David and unlike you I was born in the Smoke. I didn’t take the operation and I am trying to persuade other Uglies to come to Smoke.

This is where I born, the Smoke
I am definitely against this operation. The government brainwashed everyone by convincing them that they are ugly and the operation is the best thing that could happen to them. People feel obligatory in order to be operated. They always show the best side of the operation to have a positive effect on Uglies’ mind. They try to make the society perfect by the idealism that they created in their minds. As I always say, “That’s the worst thing they do to you. Whatever those brain lesions are all about, the worst damage is done before they even pick up the knife, you are all brainwashed into believing you’re ugly” (262).

This is me
Also the government makes you feel that if you don’t take the operation everybody will ignore you and you will be left out from the society. My parents, Maddy and Az, discovered the fact that the operation has a damage on brain. Maddy (my mother) said that while they were making a research they found that almost everyone had tiny lesions in their brain, exactly in the same spot. She said “If there were a health hazard, ninety-nine percent of the population would show same kind of symptoms (251). You can trust me because my parents are Doctors and they have a great knowledge about this operation.

These are the brain lesions which occured after the operation in Pretties
The government intentionally creates a misperception among Uglies, to make them believe that they need the operation in order to become pretty. Although I told Tally many times that the operation is useless and she’s already beautiful. She still insists on thinking that she needs to take the operation. Well, I know I can’t hold her responsible for what she thinks, but I’d rather she could see the beauty in herself. However, we can’t always have our druthers. For all of these reasons I am definitely against this operation. The government misleads people in order to achieve their inacceptable goals. “Becoming pretty doesn’t just change the way you look, it changes the way you think” (254).
